Our air, water, soil increasingly contaminated…our natural sanctuaries (forests) increasingly decimated…our oceans soon dispossessed of many vital & life-enhancing species…glaciers melting…wild-life disappearing…ever-less living space…soon there'll be nowhere left for us, & you to go!

WHY?
GLOBAL CONTAMINATION = GLOBAL WARMING (CLIMATE CHANGE)
BASIC REASON: Human overpopulation…ever-more pressures, competition, stresses, disease, suffering – due to overpopulation & under-education…(human ignorance!).
One could sound the alarm bells forever, but I, Cefi, & my fellow-tortoises don’t wish to turn this into the world’s most depressing web-site. Quite the contrary is our intention; we all need HOPE! Not wishful thinking, but hope based on understanding & ACTION!! I observe you humans from my closer to the ground position, - rushing about, never stopping, mostly thinking about making money (apart from having sex!) in order to rush about even more, - to stop & think even less. Neither I nor other tortoises & even less most other co-habitants of this OUR planet understand you one little bit. In your evident irrationality you also destroy whatever may cross your path, either to eat us or merely for sport, as you call it. Just as well I am a tortoise, with at least my own shelter. I move slowly, cautiously & try to keep out of your way. Others are not so lucky. I would hate to have become a Whale, Dolphin, Seal or even an Elephant - such a powerful creature; but hopelessly vulnerable & free to be destroyed with just one or two 50c bullets. Why are you killing every other creature? Just to fill your bellies? Your pockets? To satisfy your egos?
Seemingly not content with massacring defenceless co-habitants of our planet, you also do it to each other for even weirder reasons. And then you have the gall to proclaim yourselves the superior species, the Sapiens - often acting out your irrationality with Divine consent even....wow, is all that comes to my humble mind down here, close to the earth. Wow, what supreme gall!
In desperation, we, the lesser creatures of OUR common habitat, planet Earth have formed an environmental support organization, essentially because we are very worried, in fact petrified. So we would like to help you Homo sapiens save the old planet, in order for all of us together to be able to enjoy life a little longer! We simply cannot accept the notion that God created us all merely for you to destroy it all. If God created us all, then surely he intended for all of us to have rights; principally the right to exist or co-exist! And if it wasn't God who did all this, if its all by virtue of Evolutionary processes, then we still claim our rights to coexist, with respect, since almost inevitably we will all share one common origin, one common event - allowing this to have taken place. This incalculable miracle, this life-supporting planet, possibly one of only a handful in the vastness of space-time deserves better....So we'll lend you a helping hand to turn this around, to stop the madness, the Save the Old Planet - for all of us, because it's our butts, your butts that are at stake here - make no mistake about it!

Here’s HOW:
As a citizen of this planet you have RIGHTS! (JUST AS WE LESSER CREATURES HAVE rIGHTS!). You have the same BIRTH-RIGHTS as every other citizen. You can & should alert the ‘Powers-that-be’ of your intention to express & exercise your RIGHTS. FROM OUR LOWLY PERSPECTIVE, trudging along to the polls every few years is a supreme waste of time. Even in the best functioning democrazies, life has become far too complex to accept anyone’s Leadership for 4, 5 or 25 years just like that…
The issues now require constant monitoring & our Leaders need to be made aware as often as may be required that citizen’s are concerned about pressing, vital issues. If Leadership will not, or seemingly cannot deal with those issues adequately, then perhaps they need a more fitting job! Let them try modelling, or perhaps going to Hollywood…may be more their speed. (Most seem so fittingly wrapped up in their vanity anyhow..) But we do need to tell them!

Sapiens have CLOUT! Much more clout than you may have imagined…why not use it to help Save the Old Planet? You have choices! Many purchasing choices, often many times each day…
By using your choices judiciously, in ways to benefit those producers, entities & nations where environmental concerns are evident…& punish those where they’re not – not only NOT evident, but where the environment, our environment, YOUR environment are ignored, abused & even kicked regardless, where we lesser creatures are tortured & destroyed.
Perhaps you’re already doing something like this…possibly (hopefully) buying saver light-bulbs over stupid incandescent types…buying organic produce…eco-friendly products & services generally..-Great! But not effective enough for the true emergency we’re living!
We all need Governments & Industry to be informed of our choices & how they may be loosing out as a result of their policies. This way they can reach for a calculator & see real numbers which they may not like!

The issues we Tortoises could feel concerned or extremely unhappy about are sadly too numerous…This does not mean we don’t care or that you should care less about local problems. We’ll be glad to offer advice, or connect you with a local group searching for solutions.

Here’s our List – those issues we feel require the most urgent attention globally & then a brief note on why & what you citizens can try to DO to mitigate or revert them:
1. OVER-POPULATION
A simple illustration: If you & your sapien spouse + 2 kids live in a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 1-kitchen apartment, try sharing it with another 4, 8, 16 & eventually 128 people…heck….This planet’s available living area is limited, but even more so are its resources. The contamination produced by 4 people may be manageable, but by 128 in the same space…?!
A simple sum: More & more people = more & more contamination = ever-less quality of life! This is undoubtedly the absolute root cause of our predicament!

WHAT CAN BE DONE?
On an individual level there are obvious & simple choices! Don’t create large families, one or two children is tops. The Earth’s population should now at the very least stabilize…
Education in this field is badly needed! China has adopted seemingly strict, but necessary measures. One may not immediately agree with the manner in which they’re enforced, but they are needed now, everywhere! There is no point in simply feeding the hungry - there needs to be a reciprocal gesture to stop producing more & more hungry mouths to feed who will in all probability be hungry from the moment they see the light of day. It is a mathematically unsustainable reality & needs to be tackled at its source. But who has the courage??

Talk about Global warming (Climate change) - Why are we still driving & using vehicles with motors which poison the very air we breathe? That includes cars, motorcycles, buses & air&sea-craft. Why are we still burning fossil fuels to do the same? Why do we contaminate the air we NEED to live!!
This is certainly one the great paradoxes of mankind. Don’t tell us the technology isn’t yet there for environmentally friendly engines…please!! The costs are still too high….is another sterile argument we cannot accept. Our governments don’t hesitate to spend ZILLIONS on military junk, even on enough nuclear junk to wipe us off the planet for EVER, but they can’t afford the incentives a cozy Industry needs to produce alternative motors?? Or are the Oil companies’ Lobbies THAT powerful?? If you believe the one about ‘cannot afford’, you’ll believe anything, right!

Individually you do have a few choices, but you’re also too cosy getting into those products very able marketing systems have conned you into falling in-love with. Ask yourself if you really need to make that trip, take that flight, and buy that SUV? Why not use public transportation when available? Fly less, take a train, take a boat, buy a bike & if a new car is unavoidable at the very least buy a Hybrid. Boycott those nonsensical marketing events like Motor-Shows, Formulae 1,2,3 & 57 races, unless they’re solar powered & until manufacturers wish to show off their Hydrogen-powered SUVs. Meanwhile, just don’t go, instead take your loved one for a stroll in the park, (you may even meet me or a close relative)! They may just begin to listen in Detroit, Stuttgart, Coventry, Tokyo, Seoul & Vladivostok!!

3. OCEAN & RIVER-CONTAMINATION
The fish we kill & eat are already sick, contaminated with lead, mercury & such pleasant substances. Why? Because too many of us are dumping our industrial & personal waste into the oceans, quite apart from killing everything that swims in them. Most of our rivers also bear witness to a species gone off its rocker. If it’s not chemical-industrial contamination, then its human waste & since we attach so much nonsensical value to metals such as Gold, we also don’t seem to mind destroying some of the planet’s most sensitive areas by allowing mining operations using plenty of cyanide & mercury to enhance our rivers.
WHAT CAN BE DONE?
A small, relatively unknown environmental group in Venezuela (Universal Wave) began organising a Gold Boycott in 1991. They made few friends & some real enemies! We propose just that now – avoid buying gold in any shape or form & lobby governments & mining companies at the very least to enforce bans on mining in sensitive environments. If that won’t work we’ll promote a total GOLD BOYCOTT worldwide. If you could only see with your own eyes what it really takes, the damage mining causes, you would not buy that trinket, nor make that investment guaranteed!
At STOP we are totally opposed to fishing methods that kill everything in their paths, kilometric nets, satellite spotting & we repeat, bloody whaling. The worst offenders are those already mentioned but there are others. If you have good data about mining, over-fishing, illegal fishing & bloody whaling, please share it with us. We will organise action!

4. PESTICIDE USE
So in addition to the afore-mentioned you also poison our soils! What’s left? Of course more & more mouths to feed requires ultra-efficient production methods, or there may not be enough food to go round, which there seemingly isn’t anyhow, judging by the number of poor people starving….
If we take desertification into account as well, the picture doesn’t brighten, does it?! There has been a tendency toward ‘organic’ in recent years, but there’ll never be enough organic to feed 6.5 billion people (and counting…)!

We, the Tortoises suggest a global cooperative effort to rationalise production & distribution of basic foods at least. Perhaps it’s high time for a World Government…but at least a global effort to best make use of the available land for cultivation, followed by a distribution system to eradicate hunger. This requires attention to what we believe to be our root problem, population management, a better name! It is obviously not viable to pretend feeding endlessly growing populations in areas of the world where their reality simply cannot support endless growth….
Pesticide use needs to be reduced & eventually banned, (no one ever thinks about what we lesser creatures suffer as a result) but unless root problems such as demographics & better opportunities for economic self-sustainability are also addressed, you’ll probably just use more & more chemicals on our soils as well as other controversial technologies such as genetically modified seeds, some of which may be ok, but the jury seems to be out on that one still.

5. DEFORESTATION/DESERTIFICATION
Of course this is also demographics-related! What isn’t? Chopping down our forests at a rate of knots. Why? Because you want the timber for building, for decorating, even for cleansing your teeth. This is all totally suicidal now. There are plenty of alternative materials, & in those few areas where there aren’t any, only use timber from ‘farmed’ sources, for heaven’s sake! Cut a tree – plant 10 new ones, should be the only acceptable method!
The other noxious ‘reason’ for devastating our woods relates to ‘food’. More & more mouths require more & more land to farm in one way or another….Back to basics….!

STOP buying the wrong timber! Boycott all manufacturers & retailers selling hard-wood furniture, doors, whatever. Boycott those countries still allowing or turning a blind eye to deforestation, whether ‘legal’ or illegal. We shall soon publish a list of the worst offenders. Then we’ll promote ACTION!

IMMEDIATE ACTION
STOP will commence its programs with one very dear to our hearts & minds, to try and STOP the WHALING butchery, as well as the SEAL butchery. These activities are symbols of the most primitive savagery inherent in mankind. There is absolutely NO justification for either one or anything akin! Just to stuff some bellies with whale meat is certainly no justification. To butcher Seals, (not ‘cull’, as the English language prefers to less crudely name a murderous activity) due to some spurious reasoning related to ‘over-population’, seems ironic in extreme….or is that the way some people in Canada think one should perhaps deal with your own over-population? Best start wearing pretty solid helmets when visiting Canada....an option the defenceless Seals do not have.

For starters we, the Tortoises (including Canadian & Japanese varieties), propose to BOYCOTT ALL JAPANESE & CANADIAN PRODUCTS, avoid travelling to either country (unless you're already there of course), avoid their airlines, banks & other services, & TELL US of your alternative choice, so we can inform their Governments of the cost of their criminal* behaviour!!! But please do not interpret this as an anti-Canadian or anti-Japanese program specifically. We are perfectly aware how many, many citizens of these two nations feel as strongly as we do about these particular activities & you, as a sapiens citizen of this planet can apply your own Boycott(s) wherever & whenever you feel particularly strongly about an environmental, political or human & animal Rights issue!! The important point in all this is to INFORM the authorities concerned how their inconsiderate policy, action or inaction has had an effect; that it comes with a tab...They need to know how a good many concerned or even disgusted citizens have stopped buying their country's products or have made alternative choices which will cost them! When you exercise your sapien alternative, write to the Trade Ministry of the Nation affected, or tell us & we'll let them know!

We now INCLUDE COSTA RICA in our boycott program for the totally unacceptable hypocrisy in promoting itself via a 'Green Image' while secretly condoning & benefiting financially from the unimaginable butchery of Sharks & other marine creatures, sponsored by Asian, especially Taiwanese, Hong Kong & mainland China commercial interests. Marine creatures are being butchered, savagely butchered & probably will be exterminated in order to get a bowl of 'Shark-fin soup' into ignorant bellies at around $90 a serving....
